With the new year right around the corner many Americans are already coming up with their resolutions for 2010. I guarantee that the most popular resolution will be (and most likely always is) to lose weight. So when the new year starts don't waste you money on a gym membership that you probably won't use past February. Head on down to your local martial arts school and check it out. If you have been thinking about starting martial arts it is time to take action and get into the dojo. "What are you waiting for?"
If you live in a small town then your choice of schools will probably be limited, but if you live in a location that has an array of different arts check them out before you decide to pick one. You will want to look at price, the instructor, school atmosphere, and if you are interested in what they teach. Once you have picked out your martial arts school you will have to get a few things to be ready to train. The most important thing you will need is a uniform. Your uniform is very important because you will wear it every time you train and you want it to be comfortable and durable. I'm gonna tell you now, if you are serious about martial arts don't be a cheapskate and skimp on your uniform. You will regret it later on and will eventually have to get a new one. If you have chosen Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as your art of choice for the new year then check out the Ronin Brand Gold Class Gi. This bjj gi is made of 100% cotton and the jacket has no seam in the back which makes it less likely to rip during training. When you are rolling around on the mat you are going to want a gi to hold up to the rigors of training. If you decide to pick a striking art, like karate then check out one of the Ronin Brand Karate Gis. There are a wide variety of styles, colors, and weights. So, if you have been thinking about starting martial arts 2010 is your year to do it! Don't put it off any longer. The benefits that you will get will stick with you forever. -The Last Ronin- by: BestBuyMAS

In previous posts I discussed products that you can use when you have no training partners available. Once such tool was the Wavemaster Free Standing bag. If you own one (or have ever used one) then you know that it is a great piece of equipment and can be used for all types of martial arts workouts. Did you know that with the Proforce Double Paddle Clapper Target you can take your Wavemaster workouts to the next level? Yes, this training aid can be strapped on to your free standing bag to give you a multi-dimensional workout.
The Proforce Double Paddle Clapper Target is similar to the hand held clapper targets; however, it features a larger striking surface, more padding, a clear sound when struck, and can be attached to large or medium size bags at various heights. You can use this target for all sorts of strikes--from round kicks to spinning kicks and for punches as well. In our martial arts school we use the paddle clapper targets and to be able to have one that doesn't require a partner is great. I am one of those martial artists who struggle with the spinning kicks and when I train on my own the only option I have is to kick in the air (with no real target). Another great feature about this target is that it is beneficial to all types of martial artists who practice the striking arts (not just karate and taekwondo practitioners). If your style of martial arts practices the penetrating round house kick then this target is a must. If you are looking for a great way to practice those tricky strikes and kicks (that usually require a partner) then fear not, because the Proforce Double Paddle Clapper Target has got your back. -The Last Ronin- www.associatedcontent.com/ www.roninmma.blogspot.com/ www.ehow.com/members/thelastronin.html by: BestBuyMAS

I have been in martial arts for quite a few years and have seen many students come through our local school. There have been adults, kids, people with loads of talent, and some with no athletic skill what so ever. No matter what type of student they were, they all had one thing in common--they wanted to become a black belt. Wanting to achieve the level of black belt is a great goal to have; however, in my opinion it should not be your sole purpose for training. Once you have achieved your goal and have a black belt, what next? Do you just quit? Hopefully by the time you are that high in rank you would come to see that martial arts is more than just earning belts. It is a life long journey that can transform you into a different (and better) person if you take your training seriously and have the right frame of mind.
As I said before, martial arts is a life long journey. Your black belt isn't the end of the road, but instead just another marker on the path. The same thing goes with the colored belts you earn. In martial arts everyone starts out the same, as a white belt. Being a white belt is nothing to be ashamed of and you shouldn't try to rush through this period and get to your next belt. Take everything in and build a strong fundamental base. I guarantee that you will be a better martial artist if you do. I guess what I am telling you is to wear your rank with pride. My instructor always says, "No matter what your rank, try to be the best you can be. If you are a yellow belt then try to be the best yellow belt." That may sound funny and you may be thinking, "Why wouldn't I try to be the best?" The point my instructor is trying to make is not to get a head of yourself and to focus on your task at hand. Another way to display your rank with pride is by keeping your old belts and putting them on a belt display rack. A belt display rack is a great thing to have, because it allows you to keep your old belts out in the open (instead of in a box in the closet) and it is a constant reminder of your journey so far. Century Fitness makes two different wooden display racks for either 6 or 10 belts. The belts fit neatly into their own slot and the racks can be mounted on the wall. These items make great gifts and guess what? FREE SHIPPING to the continental US. You can't beat that. So remember, no matter what rank you are wear it with pride and try to be the best you can be! -The Last Ronin- www.associatedcontent.com/ www.roninmma.blogspot.com/ www.ehow.com/members/thelastronin.html by: BestBuyMAS

It is during this time of year when we reflect upon what we are thankful for. For me, I am thankful for my wonderful family, boyfriend, friends, good health, and my martial arts training. I am sure that many of you feel the same way and have many things to be thankful for. I guess the point I am trying to make is that if you are thankful for someone then let them know. If you are thankful for your martial arts training then make sure you take it seriously and don't waste your time when you are in your dojo or training hall. If you want to take your training to the next level then check out some of the previous blog posts. There are lots of little tips and tidbits that any martial artist can apply to his or her training.
Another topic I want to discuss is staying in shape and keeping up with your martial arts training during the holiday season. When the holidays hit it is easy to over eat and slack off, but as serious martial artists you need to be strong and push past the temptations. You can still have fun and enjoy the holidays, but don't over eat and don't skip out on your training. Another great thing to do is to make time to train on your own or with a partner. You can add in some conditioning drills, do some sparring, or work on your technique. If you don't have a training partner and want to have a solid workout then I would go with the Herman Digital Interactive Training Partner. We have one of these training aids at our dojo. This digital trainer can attach to a wide variety of bags or targets, and measures number of strikes, strike impact, calculates maximum power, and more. So as you enjoy the upcoming holiday season make sure to give thanks for the things that are important in your life and to keep up the hard work as 2009 comes to a close. -The Last Ronin- www.associatedcontent.com/thelastronin http://www.roninmma.blogspot.com/ www.ehow.com/members/thelastronin.html by: BestBuyMAS |
