Muay Thai is the Thai name for a form of martial arts that is practiced in many Asian countries, primarily in the southeast. Muay Thai is considered a national sport in Thailand and is also known as Thai Boxing or the more poetic "Art of the Eight Limbs".
Muay Thai began as Krabi Krabong, which was a type of military fighting style practiced by the Siamese with a sword held in one hand. Muay Thai became a sporting martial art and is still very much alive in Thailand to this day as a competitive sport. Martial arts have been a part of the military in Asia since ancient times and Muay Thai has a long history as a respected martial art. The Muay Thai used in professional sporting events is a little different from the combat style, however it is an exciting and fast paced sport. Muay Thai primarily uses kicks and punches in a ring with gloves much like those used in Western Boxing matches. The hands, shins, elbows, and knees are all used extensively in this martial art. Nearly all of the techniques in Muay Thai use the entire body movement. Such movements include rotating the hip with each kick, punch, and block. The rotation of the hips in Muay Thai techniques is very distinctive and makes the Muay Thai style of fighting instantly recognizable. If you're interested in learning the Muay Thai style, you can get the gear that you need to practice including the Thai shorts that is made to allow for the physical mobility that Muay Thai demands. The most important pieces of equipment one can buy to practice muay thai is a thai heavy bag, leather head gear, & muay thai shin guards. Most of the heavy bags are about 6ft tall and weigh about 95-125 lbs. Labels: training by: BestBuyMAS |
