Before your next training session I want you to ask yourself this one question. “Do I have adequate protection?” What I am talking about is when you train are you wearing a mouth piece and guys are you wearing your cup? If your answer is “no”, then you are really putting yourself at risk for some ugly injuries.

The most important piece of protective equipment that you are going to purchase is a mouth piece. Every time that you spar or grapple you should wear it, as you are at risk of being hit in the face (either on purpose or by accident). Wearing a mouth guard can help prevent broken teeth, lacerations to the mouth, facial bone fractures, and concussions.(1) These injuries can take you away from training for an extended period of time and can lead to expensive medical bills.

When you purchase a mouth piece it need not be an expensive, custom one from the dentist. Shock Doctor is a company that makes quality mouth guards at affordable prices. The Shock Doctor Gel Max is a guard designed for high impact protection. It has a heavy duty rubber frame and comfortable gel liner. This mouth guard comes in both youth and adult sizes. If you wear braces then don’t worry, because Shock Doctor makes a “Braces” Mouth guard. There is no reason to not wear a mouth guard. For less than $20 you can protect yourself or your children and avoid costly medical bills.

Another important piece of protective equipment is a groin protector. I have seen many times where guys decide not to wear a cup and end up getting kicked where it counts. Why put yourself at risk for lots of pain and potential serious injury? I shouldn't have to go on and on about why you need a groin protector. Shock Doctor makes a couple different styles. If you want a groin protector and compression shorts then check out the Shock Doctor BasiX. If a traditional jock strap and cup is more your style then check out the Shock Doctor X-Fit. Whatever you decide to go with make sure you are adequately protected.

The next time you or your children step into the dojo don’t be without the proper protection. A mouth guard and cup will only cost you a little bit of money and in the long run you will be less prone to injuries that could cause you to quit training.
