As martial artists we spend most of our time training in the dojo, however, should we ever need to use these skills it will most likely occur outside of the gym. So how do we prepare ourselves for the various locations we could find ourselves fighting in? With environmental training. This type of training is simply practicing your martial arts in different locations or situations you might come across in the real world. It could include practicing in a park, on a concrete parking lot, in a small space or hall way, on stairs, with shoes on, and in your street clothes. These situations are ones you encounter each and everyday and if you are not used to training within these confines then how will you react when a real situation arises?

Other ways to incorporate environmental training would be to train in the rain, on the beach or sand, in mud, and by incorporating objects, such as sticks, purses, or other things you could come across on the street. This type of training takes your martial arts to a more real world level. It’s not just about scoring points anymore, but learning to survive when you need to.

If you are wanting to add environmental training to your regular routine then grab your training partners and head out to a location other than your dojo. Bring along your body shields & focus targets so you can practice kicking and punching. I guarantee that you won't be throwing all the same flashy techniques that you usually do. Make sure that you and your buddies are dressed in some street clothes and shoes for a more realistic training session. If you train with weapons, such as escrima sticks, bring them along too. This is one of the most realistic weapons you could train with, because you can pick up virtually anything that looks like a stick and use it the same way.

So next time you head out to train make it some environmental training. If you have never trained this way then you are in for a real treat.
