A few months ago I wrote a post entitled Expand Your Mind. In it I discussed what I felt were some of the reasons martial artists should make reading books a part of their training. Beyond the realm of books, another great medium to learn from is videos. First off, I would like to reiterate that I am not saying books and dvds should replace training with a qualified martial arts instructor. With that said I do feel that martial arts videos make wonderful training tools.

I have been training in martial arts for over 7 years now in a primarily stand up/ striking style. A few years ago I really wanted to learn Brazilian jiu-jitsu, but because I live in a small town there were no options for me to find instructors. Desperate to learn I decided to turn to bjj books and videos. I hold no rank in bjj, but because I picked up some videos on the topic I have a better understanding of how things work (compared to what I would know if I had done nothing).

The point that I am trying to make is that because I purchased some martial arts videos I learned something that might not have been taught at my school. Videos are also extremely useful when trying to learn weapons. Again at my school weapons are not our primary focus, so if I want to learn how to use nunchaku or the sai it might be beneficial for me to purchase a video on those weapons.

Videos are also great to give you new training ideas. Say that you have a free standing kick bag, such as the Wavemaster, then a video could give you new ideas and drills to implement into your training.

So the next time that you are shopping for martial arts training aids don't forget to check out the martial arts video section. You might find yourself pleasantly surprised and wind up getting something that really benefits your training.
